Orra's Homecoming

Oct. 15, Tuesday morning bright & clear . . . This American air gives us good spirits . . . Splendid American sunset, the first we have been permitted to see since we sailed. . . . On deck in the evening for the first time, a most glorious scene . . . Moon high & bright & reflecting on the ocean. Stood a long time watching the path of the vessel as distinct as a road as far as I could see. Retired quietly & slept . . .

16 October, Wed. morning. Bright & beautiful. Mr. H. up to breakfast in fine spirits. Sails set at 12-1/2 knots towards home. All hearts glad. Shall I ever forget these scenes through which I am passing? God grant I may never. Such exhibitions of Himself, such answers to prayers, such signal mercies, such unexpected events as have occurred in these, the last six months of my life surely should be kept in grateful remembrance.
