Orra at the Peace Congress in Frankfurt

Orra doesn't mention that, as a woman, she could sit only at the back of the hall. Ever accommodating, she enjoyed the conference anyway.

Aug. 22, Frankfurt International Peace Congress

Convention met today at ten at Paul’s church, formerly used for meetings of Parliament. Very commodious building, fine marbled pillars, not much ornament except tricoloured flags & curtains, one large painting of Germania. Opened at 10 in German, French & English, speeches in all these languages, 5 or 6 resolutions. Recess at 12, adjourned at 5. Did not get many of the names of the speakers, except Mr. Cobden with a thunder of applause. One black man from New York. . . . Large number of ladies. Met several Americans.

Aug. 24

Have enjoyed more than I anticipated in attending the meetings though not able to understand. Have been interested to see the harmonious spirit of these influential men from so many different countries, see their faces & hear their voices. Hope it may do good.
