In 1836 William Buckland published his entry for the Bridgewater Treatises, a series of books in which prominent religious and scientific figures demonstrated how the sciences and the Christian Bible were in harmony with one another. He was so impressed with Edward Hitchcock’s recently published article in American Journal of Science about the tracks of the Connecticut River Valley that he included reference to them, even though his book was nearly on its way to press.
