In Brief

Roswell Field's quarry at Gill

Roswell Field's farm on the banks of the Connecticut River as it wound its way between Gill and Montague (now Turners Falls), Massachusetts, was upstream and within sight of an early dam. Part of Barton Cove was included in his property, and some of the fossil footprints were below the high-water line. Some summers, he was barely able to quarry certain sections because the water was too high. He had other small quarries on the small peninsula jutting into the cove that were not affected by the water level. One can still be seen today.
