Dig Deeper

Theodolites gradually replaced surveying compasses because they provided much greater accuracy. These precision instruments use a telescope to view the object being measured and can perform both horizontal and vertical angle measurements. The finely graduated circles used to calculate angles are read using magnifying lenses. Modern versions of the theodolite are still used by surveyors today.
