Dig Deeper

This full-length portrait of Edward Hitchcock was taken less than four years before his death in 1864. Despite a lifetime of weak health, he appears erect and confident, standing without leaning heavily on a chair that probably could not have taken much weight in any case. Toward the end of his life, he stopped teaching in the classroom, but instead had students come to his home for instruction, even when he was finally in his sickbed.
